Memorial Day Driving Safety Tips

This weekend is the Memorial Day holiday. Are you ready for the fun that is to be had? The grill is fired up, the pool is ready to be used, and millions of us will be hitting the roads to get to our holiday destinations.

Since Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer, many Americans will be traveling for the weekend in near-record numbers. According to AAA, this year more than 41.5 million Americans will be traveling. That’s a nearly 5% increase over last year’s totals and the highest number of travelers than it has been in more than a dozen years. The increase in travelers is happening even despite the fact that gas prices are higher than they have been since 2014.

Still, the majority of travelers will be choosing to drive to their Memorial Day vacation destinations, which means that now is the time that you should start to make sure you are ready to make the drive. Therefore, we have some extremely helpful tips to make sure you have a safe holiday weekend.

If you’ve been neglecting your car, now is the time to get that tune up. Stop and get an oil change, make sure your tire pressure is correct (it can change now that the temps are warmer outside), and also make sure that you’ve addressed any other maintenance issues your vehicle may have, especially important ones you’ve been neglecting. One variable that can’t be predicted is how other drivers are on the road, so make sure you are on high alert while driving this weekend. Defensive driving during busy weekends like this is going to be imperative. Oh and when you do leave your house, make sure the entire car is buckled up; it just may save your life.

If you are driving, one key thing to consider, if you can, is when you leave to get to your destination. So, if you can, try not to leave when everyone else is. Consider leaving early on Friday morning, or coming home on Sunday evening. Avoiding those peak traffic times when everyone else is leaving is going to be key.

In addition, don’t speed this weekend, as the police are always out in full force during holiday weekends. The last thing you want is an expensive ticket to ruin the start or end of your vacation festivities.

You’ll also want to make sure you take a look at the weather forecast, not only for the destination you’re driving to, but also for anywhere you may be driving through along the way. A surprise storm can be a very dangerous situation and if you can avoid it by looking at the forecast ahead of time, then you should try to.  If there is a storm that’s unavoidable, make sure to drive cautiously with optimal working windshield wipers.

While we know you are planning for a great Memorial Day weekend, therefore we want you to drive in a smart and cautious way. Making sure you are safe along the way is something that is so easy to do, but is also easy to take for granted.
